Wow!!! Those were the words out of my mouth after seeing the
box office numbers for Furious 7. This
was the seventh film of the action filled franchise. This franchise has come a long way from its
street racing roots, and the people still seem to love every one of
them. This one was especially special
since it was the last one to star Paul Walker who played fan favorite Bryan
O’Connor. We lost Paul a year ago to a
car accident, and this film does a great job of paying tribute to him.
Now back to the movies insane box
office. This movie in 3 days (4 if you
count the Thursday night premiers at 7 PM) grossed about $147 million dollars (Box Office Mojo). To put that into perspective it grossed more
than all of the Twilight films, and all but one Harry Potter film. This basically solidifies the Fast and
Furious franchise as the best non-superhero, action franchise of the
millennia.
Now getting into the movie. I saw this movie on Friday, with the rest of
the free world and it was a great movie.
The action was over the top, as always, the cars looked fantastic and
places in which the filmed were beautiful.
One of my favorites of this movie though was Jason Statham. Statham, one of the greatest action stars of
this generation, made his first appearance in the franchise with this
film. He played Deckard Shaw. Shaw is the older brother of the main
antagonist of the last film, on top of that he’s an assassin, who used to be in
MI6, S.A.S, and any other secretive branch of the British military there
is. Basically this guy was a total
badass, and Statham did a great job of portraying this on the screen. One of the high points of the film that I was
most looking forward to was Statham’s fight versus Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. In the
trailers for this movie they showed clips of this fight and every time it would
look more awesome. Needless to say it
was great when I saw it in the theater, even though it was one of the first
scenes in the movie. Click here to see a
peek of the action. (Youtube)
Now to the negatives of this
film. No movie is without its
problems. First off this film has a run
time of 2 hours and 20 minutes. This
isn’t necessarily a bad thing when you’re watching the film since there’s
usually something entertaining on the screen, but there were a few parts that
could’ve been shortened or chopped altogether.
The biggest problem I had with this film hands down though was “The
Rock”, or should I say the lack of “The Rock”? Dwayne Johnson has been a main
staple of this franchise since Fast Five (2011) and has become a fan
favorite. In the advertisements for this
film we know that he broke his arm because there’s a scene where we see him
break out of a cast and say “Daddy’s got to go to work.” Now I was expecting that he would get injured
towards the middle of the movie and have a heroic return at the end and this
was partially true, he did basically save the day at the end of the movie, but
he was only on screen for about 10-15 minutes altogether. They basically did what Godzilla (2014) did
with Bryan Cranston, and Godzilla too.
This kind of annoyed me since “The Rock” plays my favorite character,
and is one of my favorite action stars.
Luckily though the rest of the cast did such a great job that even
though I was annoyed at the lack of “The Rock”, I was still enjoying the film.
This film is one of the best in
the franchise. I personally liked the
second movie better, but this is a very close second. It has everything you’d expect a great action
movie to have, good fights, sexy cars, and attractive women in bikinis. All kidding aside though this is one of the
best action movies of late. The movie
does an excellent job of making you feel like you’re part of this “family” of
drivers, and at the end we lose a family member and it’s truly devastating. The ending of this film will put any fan of
the franchise, or of Paul near tears, it’s that well done. Many have speculated what will happen to the
franchise without Paul and most people believe that there isn’t a future. I disagree.
This movie says goodbye to Paul, but it open the door to a bright future
with the rest of the cast. I’m not
saying replace Paul, because that’s just not possible, but if you just add
someone like “The Rock” to the main team it could work.
For me this film was an 8.5/10, it
told a great story while keeping me entertained. I look forward to when they release the box
set of all 7 movies together so I can have a marathon and relive some of the
best action movies of my lifetime.
